Topic: My Why
As an alumna of District 21, having attended Longfellow Elementary and Cooper Middle Schools, Rachel Schless brings a deeply personal connection to her role as a special education teacher. Growing up with two siblings who have special needs, she experienced firsthand the dedication, support and care that our community provided her family. Inspired by that generosity and determined to give back, she has devoted her career to creating a nurturing and empowering environment for students with diverse learning needs, ensuring that every child receives the guidance and encouragement she once relied upon.
Now, as a special education teacher in the Educational Life Skills Program (ELSP) at Riley Elementary School, Schless has her dream job. She helps develop individualized education plans (IEPs) based on student needs. She also sets goals for their independence, teaches them academics, helps them with functional communication, and instructs them on how to work towards successful outcomes for themselves.
A few years back, she had a student who refused to do anything. She laid in the back of the classroom, not forming relationships or using her communication device. She was basically closed off. Over time, Schless worked to find out what motivated her, and the student started communicating her wants and needs and, eventually, even came to Schless and others for comfort. Schless built that trust over two years and uncovered a sweet and smart individual who began to blossom.
Schless likes to give students many opportunities for inclusion. In fact, she hosts book buddy sessions, whereby she pairs students from the Academic Instructional Program (AIP) with her students in ELSP. They engage in reading and writing together, but what’s more inspiring is the confidence, leadership, patience and understanding that is displayed on both sides – not to mention the connections it creates.
Outside of school, Schless spends time with her friends, family, and cat, listens to music, and even paints creative designs on canvas shoes (see photos included).

After 12 years of dedicating her time to working and volunteering with individuals who have special needs, Schless has found her dream job. Every day, she brings her experience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to her students, creating a classroom where every child feels valued and supported. Her journey reflects not only her professional expertise but also her deep passion for making a meaningful difference in the lives of those she serves.
